My old dog would have grabbed the slowest one. Current is only 8 months, so we're all a bit unsure of that for know

Sounds like the dog plays with them more than he does. Most people who live in the mountains understand the old story about a camel sticking his nose under the tent well enough to avoid feeding large wild animals. Especially from their own garden!
Birds are always a delight though. Not unusual to make friends with one of them. Something very charming about one landing on an open window and chirping until you come outside to have a leisurely talk.
